2009 Students' Blog

Dear Marists

The new academic year is starting in less than 3 weeks.

For those who have not created your group blog, please do so. For those who had already created their group blog, well done. However, please remember to add your team members as your blog authors. Everyone in the group would have to post his reflection on the group blog.

Other than this blog account, do sign up a box.net account (at http://www.box.net) to store and publish your files (could be assignment or report).

Cheers.

Create a Blogsite at Blogger.com

Dear Marists

For those who are still not sure how to create your blog, view the following video.

Students' Blogroll

So far, we're glad to have 10 groups online with us. We're still waiting for more to come on board. We should have a total of 90 students' blogs. Tell your friends if their blogs are not up yet.

As you can see at the bottom right corner of this site, we've listed links to your blogsites. The list is growing.

We would appreciate it if you could standardise the "Title" of your blog to:

2009 Sec 2x No. yy-zz Project: <>

where

x: your class alphabet letter (e.g. A, B, C)
yy: index number of your 1st member
zz: index number of your last member

<>: If you have already identified your project title, add it in, else leave it blank for the time being.

Thank you.

Online File Sharing

Dear Marists

Do you have an online storage that you could share files with others?

Try this! http://www.box.net

It's simple and nice. There are some services such as edit documents online, posting files directly on blogs, fax documents, etc.

You may require to share some of your files with your members and teachers... Other than this, the google doc in your google accounts is good enough.

You may wish to response here.

Remember to subscribe to this site with RSS feed (Mail in your macbook will do) to keep yourself updated with more information.

Doing more with your google account

When you have a google account, you could collaborate more. One such apps is google docs. Here's the video on google docs

Using RSS Feeds

What is RSS Feeds?

Readers:
1) Google Reader (I assume you can sign up a gmail account)
http://www.google.com/reader

2) A standalone software that runs on Mac OS: Shrook
Shrook is free
You may download shrook here: http://www.utsire.com/shrook/

That's how I would be monitoring your blogs.

Other than monitoring a blogsite using RSS feeds. You could also use it to subscribe to PODCasts, websites, news websites, etc.

Creating a Blog on Blogger.com

Dear Marists

For those who need guidance on creating a blog on blogger.com (Setting up one like this blogsite), click on this link: http://www.blogger.com to register for an account. Follow the 3 steps mentioned. For those who are more IT savvy, you may wish to guide your friends along.

You can invite your group members to co-author this blog (group blog), so that everyone can publish your reflections. Your facilitators could also assess you via this blog too.

The following screenshot is to show how you can invite your group members into the blog. However, your group mates need a google or gmail account at : http://mail.google.com.
Click on "add author" to include your members.

Happy blogging, however be sensitive to the words used. Please use proper English and no vulgarity please.

The following video features on blog.

GRACE 2009 Presentation on 20 Oct 2008

Just to summarise what Mr Varella and Mr Peh had covered today, during the briefing.

Mr Varella shared on the objectives of GRACE (Group Research And Collaborative Expedition).

Basically, the outcomes of GRACE:
1) Creative & Critical Thinker
2) Effective Communicator
3) Good Team Player (Able to collaborate in a team)
4) Life-long Independent Learners

From research, the above are attributes that an employer would look for in the 21st Century (this era).

Mr Varella also shared on some possible projects ideas (one long list), which will be updated here soon.

I am glad that some pupils had already created their group blogs. Just a reminder on the naming convention of your url:

http://2009sxxy.blogspot.com

xx- your class in year 2009
y- The first index number of the group

e.g. http://2009s2c9.blogspot.com
This will be the blogsite of Sec 2C, group 3. Let me know (via my email) if you are unable to register for this url, I'll guide you in getting another one.

Your blog allows you and your group members to post your weekly reflection as well as your project updates (videos, photos, etc.). However, please remember to handle media with care (I refer to copyrights material, remember what the gentleman from IPOS said to you this morning?).

Bookmark this blogsite for the time being. In my later posts, I'll guide you in using rss feed to keep yourself inform on any updates through Safari or a software.

Do come back again.

GRACE Lesson 2 (Week 3: 14 - 18 Jan 2008)

Dear Marists

The Key Idea for GRACE lesson 2 (week 3) is

"Project Topic and Task Selection"

Before the meeting (we call GRACE lessons as "meetings"), you will be required to:

1. Go through the resources (video, powerpoint slides, etc.) in this posting.

2. Write down topics related to Global Warming etc. that you are interested in.

3. Think and write down some guiding questions that your group can do research on.

4. If your group is interested in topics other than the suggested theme on Global Warming and Climate change, then your group can initiate your own project topic and propose to your teacher/facilitator. Some suggestions titles would be "The History of Maris Stella High School", "50 years of Education -- Maris Stella High School", "Maris Stella - The Journey", etc.

--------------------------------
During the GRACE meeting, you are required to

1. Read the generic theme ‘ Climate Change, Global Warming and Alternative Clean Energy in the 21st Century’.

2. Define and clarify the task.

3. Brainstorm and ask questions like
• What do we already know?
• What do we want to know?
• What have we learnt about it?

4. Brainstorm on Research Questions/Key Questions/Guiding Questions about the topic.

5. Choose questions that are open-ended and require your viewpoints.

6. Read the sample of a project proposal form and do your own project proposal form.

--------------------------------
For this meeting, your facilitator (GRACE teachers are known as facilitators) would assess you on both your "Content" and "Collaboration" skills. The rubrics is as follows:-

Important Notice on GRACE

Dear Secondary 2 Marists

Due to the shortage of air-time during today's assembly, I have to provide some more information other than those I mentioned today.

For this week's lesson, you have to access my previous posting. My previous posting includes:-
1) Detail on GRACE. In the past years, IPW marks are integrated into various subject's assessment marks. However, GRACE will be a subject by itself and the grades will be reflected on your report book.

2) An online lesson package which includes video presentations. You could assess these videos online, but I would strongly advise you to download them (including those files and resources) to your hard-drive or thumbdrive so that you could access them offline to avoid bandwidth jam.

Here are what you are going to expect for this week's lesson:
1) You have to go through the lesson in my previous posting, before attending the GRACE lesson.

2) During your GRACE lesson, your teacher/facilitator will bring you to the respective venues for the lesson. Please move promptly in "V" formation as we only have 1 period for GRACE.

3) You are expected to do group work based on the activity worksheet which you could download from my previous posting. You have to download a copy. You can complete it in softcopy during the lesson (provided you bring along your personal laptop with you during the lesson). Alternatively, you print it out and complete it during the lesson, OR you could write your input on A4 paper. We are trying to make it flexible as long as you keep a copy with you in the course of GRACE.

4) You would be assessed on-the-spot by your teacher/facilitator. Your facilitator will assess you based on the rubrics that you can find out in the assessment excel spreadsheet. I would encourage you to look out how and what you would be assessed every week during GRACE. This is to help you score well for this subject.
An example of the assessment rubrics, extracted from the assessment excel spreadsheet is as follow:-

click on picture to enlarge it.

If you have any query, feel free to drop a comment here OR send an email to me at mrpeh.mshs@gmail.com

Good Luck for your Group Research And Collaborative Expeditions.

Thank you.
